What Indoor Humidity Level Should Florida Homes Maintain?

Outside Air and Air Leaks Add Moisture

Florida homes take on moisture through more than the AC system. Leaky ductwork, gaps around doors and windows, attic penetrations, bathroom exhaust problems, and poorly sealed return air pathways can pull humid outdoor or attic air indoors. In some homes, negative air pressure can make the issue worse by drawing unconditioned air through openings you may not see.

Humidity Control for Florida Homes: Solutions That Fit the Cause

The right answer depends on the source and severity of the problem. For a home that stays above 60% humidity most of the time, a more thorough HVAC evaluation is warranted.

Start with the basics: use a clean filter with the manufacturer-recommended MERV rating, keep supply and return vents open, and schedule routine HVAC maintenance. Closing multiple vents to force air into another room can create airflow problems and may not solve uneven comfort. If one room is consistently humid, ductwork, insulation, return-air access, or zoning may need to be reviewed.

A whole-home dehumidifier is often the most dependable option for homes with persistent moisture. Unlike a portable unit, it works with the central HVAC system or as a dedicated ducted solution.
